FLAGSTAFF HOUSE MUSEUM OF TEA WARE — Although this beverage originated in China, the English took to tea like it was going out of style. So it seems fitting that this museum should be housed in an 1846 colonial home. The oldest surviving house of its kind in Hong Kong, deep porches protect the graceful building against the tropical sun. Local collector Dr. K.S. Lo donated his antique tea ware to form the permanent part of the museum's collection.
10 Cotton Tree Dr., Hong Kong Park, Admiralty, 2869-0690.

HONG KONG MUSEUM OF ART — Take a break from the long walk along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront and head into this museum to enjoy its beautiful works of art. The 13,000-plus collection includes Chinese calligraphy and antiques alongside works by local artists.
10 Salisbury Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2721-0116.

HONG KONG MUSEUM OF COASTAL DEFENSE — With spectacular views overlooking the Lei Yue Mun channel, this former fort's grounds are worthy of a stroll. Built by the British military more than a century ago, the site was meticulously restored with all of the batteries and cleverly hidden cannons now accessible to the public. The historic redoubt has been updated with a tented canopy, and the museum houses a number of artifacts and costumes from Hong Kong's military past. Just to the north is a gentle trail leading to the sea, giving you a sense of how the British patrolled for pirates and other enemies of the state.
175 Tung Hei Rd., Shau Kei Wan, 2569-1500.

HONG KONG MUSEUM OF HISTORY — One of the best permanent exhibitions chronicling the history of the city is also one of our most popular. Dubbed "The Hong Kong Story," it consists of film, archival material, interactive displays and photographs to give you an all-encompassing view of our development. Starting from prehistory, highlights include impressive replicas of the four major indigenous clans' houses and their respective traditions. Vignettes dot the museum, and include a life-size tram for children to play on.
100 Chatham Rd. S., Tsim Sha Tsui East, 2724-9042.

HONG KONG MUSEUM OF MEDICAL SCIENCES — Located in an elegant red-brick building, this museum opened in 1996, and charts the development of medicine in the city. It was the first to focus on both Western and traditional Chinese approaches to health care. Along with a number of herbs and remedies on display, there is antique apothecary equipment and other items of interest to the medicine buff. Plus its quiet setting, down some steps from busy Caine Road, makes it a refreshing step back in time.
2 Caine Lane, Mid-Levels, 2549-5123.

HONG KONG RAIL MUSEUM — An active KCR rail station until the 1970s, the former Tai Po stop is now a museum dedicated to trains and travel. Sit in a first-class coach circa 1950, or relive the line that began at the tip of Tsim Sha Tsui and became the longest continuous rail network in the world, running through China and into Russia and Europe. The old station contains historic displays and model trains for miniature enthusiasts, as well as several locomotives open to visitors.
13 Shung Tak St., Tai Po Market, New Territories, 2653-3455.

UNIVERSITY MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY — Born in Hong Kong, trained in Rome, based in Los Angeles, Diana Wong has integrated her experience of different cultures in her exhibition titled "Merging: The Art of Diana Wong," which includes abstract pieces in acrylic and enamel.
Through May 8.
Mon-Sat 9:30am-6pm, Sun 1:30pm-5:30pm.
94 Bonham Rd., Pok Fu Lam, 2241-5500.
